description:
In August 2003, Fiona Otway launched a youth media and HIV-prevention project for girls in the Caribbean country of St. Lucia. The Caribbean is one of the hardest-hit regions in the world for HIV/AIDS and girls are among the fastest-growing risk groups. Fiona drew inspiration from teaching hands-on video production to the participants of Breaking the Silence, who became the first-ever youth in their country to create a video that was ultimately broadcast on several national television stations. Fiona witnessed the rapid and powerful transformation of these girls as “they came to realize they have a voice.” The Breaking the Silence project was implemented in collaboration with the Planned Parenthood Association and Red Cross Society of St. Lucia.
