| In creating the Words, Camera, Action program at Intermedia Arts, Marlina Gonzalez researched and produced an interactive presentation and performance to raise awareness about the abduction and conscription of child soldiers worldwide. Twin Cities-based teen spoken word artists Nikko Sencer-Mura, Chantz Erolin (aka Bleed Yellow) and Michelle Barnes created performative responses to the videos by creating parallels with current issues around youth and the military. Elementary school students from South Minneapolis who watched the videos wrote "bedtime stories" for the child soldiers on the run and mailed their handmade storybooks and other youth books to Sierra Leone and Uganda so that the young people on the run would have books to read. Through the efforts of an intermediary in Sierra Leone, Intermedia Arts was connected to one of the child soldiers whose stories were shared through the videos. He has sporadically managed to communicate with Marlina, sending her updates on his life. |
